Fast Voting Act of 2012 (S. 3635) – Failed

The Bill: To provide incentives for States to invest in practices and technology that are designed to expedite voting at the polls and to simplify voter registration.

Sponsor: Senator Christopher Coons (D-DE)

Co-Sponsors: Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA); Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Rules and Administration Failed with adjournment

FairVote’s Take: Fairvote Action and Fairvote are excited to see legislation on the table that seeks to address obstacles for voters. However, legislation that addresses only surface-level issues is likely to have only a short-term solution. We advocate examining and addressing obstacles to voting with legislation that calls for a Constitutional right to vote and undertakes a two-pronged initiative: protecting and promoting the right to vote.
